If you aren’t looking to spend a lot of money this year on some extravagant vacation outside the Atlanta metro area or even outside of your home, here are 5 ideas to help guide you when planning your next kid-friendly staycation.
Movie Night Under the Stars
Create a movie night under the stars. All you need is a projector and a screen. Projectors range in cost from $50 to $100 and although you might want to invest in a low-cost screen, the side of a building or a wall will work as well. Also, if you really want to create that movie experience, buy bags for the popcorn, and stock up on lots of candy. When you’re done doing those steps, set everything up in your backyard and pick out a movie that you and your family can enjoy together or a movie for just the kiddos. Make sure it’s dark outside to create the mood. If you’re thinking “I don’t have time to do all of that.” You can go the easier route and just rent a projector and have professionals come by and set it up for you. Some of the packages even come with a slushy machine, bean bag chairs, and a popcorn machine.
Atlanta Zoo
The Atlanta Zoo is truly like stepping into a new world. There are so many things that this zoo has to offer, and it will surely keep your kids busy for the day. The staff is amazing and provides classes on learning about each animal and why they are so unique. After enjoying a great morning or afternoon at the zoo your kids and their friends could enjoy lunch there or if you decide to have a sit-down lunch with the family, you can do that as well. There are many food vendors at the zoo, items include pizza, chicken tenders, sandwiches, and more. That alone saves you the trouble of going and making lunches for everyone. Which is similar to you staying at a resort and having room service.
Backyard Camping
If your kids are in need of a little adventure, you could set up a campsite in the backyard and have them do different activities such as “catch fish” in a kiddie pool, make s’mores, create campfire songs, and roast hotdogs. You could even have them pretend that there’s a magical hidden treasure out somewhere, and their job as campers is to find it or have a pitch-a-tent competition and the first team or person to win gets an extra Smore.
Puppetry Arts
The center for puppetry arts is a great place to take your kids. It’s located right off of Spring Street in Atlanta in a large lime green building that you can’t miss. When you walk in, you’ll get that same “awe” feeling that you’d get if you were to travel to Disneyworld. This place is such an experience and the kids will appreciate how realistic the puppets look and act. The Center for Puppetry Arts provides live shows, workshops, and exhibits. There will never be a dull moment.
Lake Lanier
Take the kids out for some fun in the sun to Lake Lanier. A mere 50 miles from Atlanta, Lake Lanier packs a lot of possibilities for fun in the sun. You can break out the speakers and listen to some tunes, as your kids enjoy endless water activities. There is plenty to do at the lake, from boating, jet skiing, fishing, waterboarding, and more leisurely activities, like a spa day or shopping. Lake Lanier also has grills if you want to prepare your own lunch or dinner, or treat the family at one of the many restaurants at Lake Lanier.
