How I’m Adapting As A Second Time Mom

We welcomed our baby girl Brooklyn in December and everything has been going 100 miles per hour since we got home and are an official family of four. Of course in a good way, we’re welcoming all the newborn blues that come with it such as late nights, no sleep, and so much more. I can honestly say I didn’t know how our lives would change but I knew they would somehow. As a new mom to your first, second, or third, child, labor, and delivery alone is mentally exhausting but once you get home and have the lack of sleep and not really feeling 100% yourself, you’re not completely sure how to go about your day.

For me, I decided at the hospital that I would try my best to come home with a great attitude and remember that the newborn phase doesn’t last long so soak up every moment of the good and the tiring parts. I know it’s easier said than done when you have only 2 hours of sleep but being able to really lean on the family at those times especially my husband has helped me significantly feel better and get the energy I need to be there for not only myself but our two children. For all my new moms or second-time moms, I thought it’d be fun to do a quick q&a with myself to answer popular questions that could possibly help if you’re also adapting as a second-time mom.

How I’m Adapting As A Second Time Mom

What was I most excited about becoming a mom to another new little one? Did I feel different with it being my 2nd time around – like, “I got this?”

I was so excited about becoming a mom to a second child especially when I found out it was a girl. It’s like having your own mini twin that you just can’t get enough of. I was already obsessed with our son but I’m definitely obsessed with our newest little addition as well. I think with her I felt more prepared than with our son. Because we kind of knew what to expect baby wise. And already knew again to mentally prepare for the long days and nights ahead. I think when you get your mindset on something it makes the task ahead easier.

As a second time mom, what are the must-haves?

I can definitely say we over-purchased with our little guy. But with our recent addition, we knew what we did and did not use or need this time around. A few items that made our list twice were our ComoTomo bottles, the Halo bassinets, and sleepsacks, Uppababy Vista Stroller, Uppababy car seat, Baby Bjorn carrier, for me personally the Frida Mom Postpartum underpants (absolute gamechanger and much better than the hospital ones) and the Owlet Smart Sock. Every item we knew we needed we gathered them up on the Babylist to make it easy to share with family and friends who were wanting to gift our family and new baby.

The Owlet Smart Sock was a popular option that a few people even gifted themselves or other friends who were expecting just because of our rants on how much we loved it with our son and were using it again for our daughter.

The Owlet Smart Sock is the first baby monitor to track your baby’s oxygen level and heart rate—the best indication of baby’s health—while they sleep. I personally think it’s a game-changer when it comes to the mom anxiety of wondering if your baby is sleeping well. The app allows you to track all of this right from your phone. And help you sleep better knowing your baby is okay.

How do I balance working, parenting, and other aspects of life? How are my husband and I staying connected?

I think this is super important especially with us all being home understanding that there is no real thing as balance. I started giving myself grace recently. And knowing I can’t do it all and sometimes tasks don’t get done right away and that’s okay. For my husband and I, it’s been honest about showing up for each other no matter the ask. Because we’re in this together.

Date nights are not a thing at this very moment obviously but we’re taking advantage of any time we can and creating our own versions of “date night”. Whether it be catching up on our favorite shows during the kid’s naptime or taking that extra hour at night when the kids go to sleep to watch a movie that 9 times out of 10 ends up watching us because we fall asleep during it. But it’s the thought that we had something we were doing together to connect.

What’s my favorite thing about motherhood? How has motherhood changed me?

My favorite part of motherhood is everything being a mom comes with whether it be hearing mommy 100 times a day, the never-ending hugs to stepping on mini dinosaurs throughout the living room. I love my little ones. And the fact that they have helped me grow not only as a mom but as a person.

What’s one thing I would say to other mamas?

Take care of yourself each and every day. You can’t show up to be present and take care of anyone if you aren’t able to take care of yourself. In order for me to give my babies my all, I have to make sure I’m showing up 100% fully every time. It’s so important to take the time for yourself so you can be a better person to those around you. Take a shower, read a book, whatever you can do that helps you relax.

As a second time mama, I don’t have all the answers. But I think we all are growing and learning with our babies each and every day. I hope my mini list of must-haves helps you as you go on this journey. Shop my registry must-haves below.
